How Creve Coeur overcame his lifelong addiction to Soda:

From early childhood Creve has been under the murky Carmel specter of soda.  Never going long without many lusty drinks of its delightfully fizzy and intoxicating nectar; except for when he was in the Army Reserve at boot camp at age 17 and the Advanced Individual Training at 18.  The Army abruptly 'forced' to go without.  Remembering the horrible memories from these dark times in his life...  the intense Soda cravings & the vivid bubbly dreams... Well, suffice it to say he was expecting quite a drawn out and anguished battle (see original musing below)  on February 10, 2009 at 1015 am when, after reading a article of how unhealthy soda is, he decided it was time he ceased this destructive behavior.

It had be looming in the recesses of his mind for years to break this addiction, but it seems he would never rationally analyze why he was consuming a something so bad for him.  While he's not near as "tough and disciplined" as in 2005 when he broke the chains of Diet Soda's sugary/HFCS laden sibling, regular Soda; he does hope he is at least a bit wiser for age now days.

Happily reporting that since that time on 2/10/09, despite several daily cravings around certain 'trigger foods' Creve has apparently harnessed his discipline of Diet Soda.

And this is his secret.  Just as he applied it in 2005 when he stopped regular soda by drinking yucky diet soda until the regular soda craving passed.  Also applied the same principle when dieting...  whenever he got a craving for unhealthy, processed food/snack/junk food; to fill up on Broccoli or plain chicken breast!!!  Then there was no more hunger and the craving subsided.

Now this may seem like a stroke of genius to many of Creve's' countrymen, but all Creve has had to do to stop drinking diet soda is drink a different liquid!!!  Seriously, for example:  Today Creve had a BBQ pork Chop... major trigger food for soda... BBQ.  Granted it was unpleasant at first but Creve drank a glass of sugar-free raspberry cool aid and once the thirst went away from laying out at the beach and washed the BBQ down, the soda craving mysteriously absent.

Creve has aspirations of possibly drinking mainly water in the future to greatly reduce his intake of artificial sweeteners.  But, he chooses his battles lazily these days and attempts to keep a unified front for one challenge at a time...

Creve's original musing to finally tackle this health hazard:

This is a half hearted update/pledge/attempt Creve hopes to complete by 2010.  Creve's vice and most unhealthy activity is drinking diet soda...  Further research has revealed sodas to quite possibly be worse than even smoking... especially on the Liver, 1) liver cirrhosis similar to the increased risk faced by chronic alcoholics.  2) Acidity is even worse for teeth than the solid sugar found in candy.  3) Colas of all kinds are well known for their high phosphoric acid content, a substance that changes the urine in a way that promotes kidney stone formation.  4) Colas also deliver a lot of air in the form of carbon dioxide, which can cause distension of your stomach. And that distension appears to be associated with more reflux.  Not even going to get into the problems associated with artificial sweeteners I'm going to attempt to reduce as well.

In 2005 Creve made a major change to a healthier lifestyle when he switch from regular soda to diet.  Realize that for well over 20 years Creve has drank 2 liters to over a gallon+ of soda ever day.  Switching to diet made a dramatic change for Creve and cut out 1000+ empty calories daily.

Creve dislikes water unless running/cardio over 2 hours and hot out and super thirsty.  Not even sure how possible this No sodas switch will be, but anticipate many months of failing & cravings.  Will try to drink more teas, chocolate milks, and cool aids first to get past caffeine & carbonation addictions, then try to switch to water to get adapted to a less sweet life.  Perhaps, slowly lowering soda consumption or drinking a cup of water first will ease the transition.  After the couple hundred cans diet Pepsi Creve has stored up he will try to stop completely.

This presents some other problems/concerns as Creve will likely be more dehydrated from not drinking enough and possible add more sweet calories from other foods.  Also, the water alternative in Plastic bottles has it own health dilemmas with the estrogens & phthalates in the plastic.

This Diet Soda 'task' haunted Creve for years, and even as he writes it the proposition fills him with dread & doubt.

Why Diet Sodas Are Not Healthy

Many people think they are making a smart choice by choosing diet soda because they have no calories or sugar. Well, you may be surprised to learn that there are ingredients in diet soda that are, hands-down, worse for your health than sugar, so you are by no means doing yourself a favor.

Here’s a breakdown of some of the worst offenders:

Aspartame: This chemical is used as a sugar substitute in diet soda. There are over 92 different health side effects associated with aspartame consumption including brain tumors, birth defects, diabetes, emotional disorders and epilepsy/seizures.

• Acesulfame-K: Another artificial sweetener, on which testing has been scant and some studies show the additive may cause cancer.

Splenda: An artificial sweetener that may destroy up to 50 percent of your healthy intestinal bacteria, which are necessary to help maintain your body's overall balance of friendly versus unfriendly micro-organisms, and support your general health.

To learn even more information about artificial sweeteners, and why they’re not safe, I encourage you to ready my book Sweet Deception. There’s actually overwhelming evidence that consuming artificial sweeteners will likely wreak havoc on your body.

Ironically, the very reason many people choose to drink diet sodas, to prevent weight gain, is actually a myth. Numerous studies show artificial sweeteners may impair your appetite regulation and lead to weight gain.

For example, it’s been discovered that diet soda increases your risk of metabolic syndrome and, ultimately, heart disease.

What Else is Lurking in Your Can of Soda?

The average American drinks more than 60 gallons of soft drinks each year, and whether it’s diet or regular, the following ingredients are part of what you’re slurping down:

• Phosphoric Acid: This is added to give soda its characteristic “bite,” but it can also interfere with your body's ability to use calcium, leading to osteoporosis or softening of your teeth and bones.

• Caffeine: Caffeinated drinks cause jitters, insomnia, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, elevated blood cholesterol levels, vitamin and mineral depletion, breast lumps, birth defects, and perhaps some forms of cancer.

• Sodium Benzoate: This common preservative found in many soft drinks has been shown to cause DNA damage. It actually has the ability to switch off vital parts of your DNA, which could eventually lead to diseases such as cirrhosis of the liver and Parkinson's.

• Benzene: Benzene, a cancer-causing chemical, is able to form in beverages that contain vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and the preservatives sodium benzoate or potassium benzoate. Exposure to heat and light can trigger the formation.

While the federal limit for benzene in drinking water is 5 parts per billion (ppb), researchers have found benzene levels as high as 79 ppb in some soft drinks, and of 100 brands tested, most had at least some detectable level of benzene present.

It’s because of these harmful ingredients, along with the fact that one can of regular soda has about 10 teaspoons of sugar, that soda remains on my list of the five absolute worst foods and drinks you can consume.
